The rich traditions of classical animation techniques
Written by admin, November 28th, 2010

The rich traditions of classical animation techniques
When we hear the word “animation”, the image that is conjured up, for most of us, is a scene drawn in the classical animation technique of cel drawing. Classical animated films took not one approach or technique, but many. Let us look at some of the best classical animation techniques that artists have come by over the years, to bring you some of our most enduring animated classics. Stop motion animation is a laborious way of bringing motion picture. Animators who use this method create a model of a character they wish to use, and photograph it a frame for each step of motion in the model they wish to see. All the frames photographed in this way are strung together and run together for an illusion of movement. This is a method that is mainly used by beginners, and it can produce very impressive results. An example of a major motion picture that uses stop motion animation would be Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. While the concept of stop motion animation is simple enough, it is an especially laborious way of getting results. The cartoons seen on TV in the earliest years of TV animation, usually involve the classical animation techniques of cutouts and collages. Cutout animation involves the use of forms cut out of paper, that have their body parts connected with something flexible. These cutouts are filmed using the stop motion animation technique. Collage animation uses a similar process; the animated pieces used in collage animation though are not original models; they are pictures cut out of magazines. Collages have a special identifiable look that comes from the use of pieces from unconnected source pictures. An example of a popular modern animated piece that uses these techniques could be the South Park TV show. Rotoscoping is great classical animation technique. This technique involves capturing some footage of people or things in situations you wish to represent an animation, and then drawing and coloring over the pictures in the frames with the specific animated characters and backgrounds you need. This is a technique that can create mind blowing effects, and be very satisfying for the animators work on. The 2001 movie Waking Life made impressive use of this technique and swept the 2001 Sundance film festival audiences. But the image that the word “animation” conjures up in the mind most belongs to another classical animation technique altogether. That technique is the one of cel animation. Cel animation involves drawing detailed pictures over transparent plastic frames. It can be very laborious to create an entire film frame by frame with detail drawn and painted into each one. Cel animation begins with the creation of a storyboard, a plan for how the story will proceed. The timing of the film is worked out, and then, the artists begin work first drawing the backgrounds on each cel. When the general look of the film is ready, the artist begins drawing the main characters. Each cel photographed to make a frame in the film. Artists practice the vocal dubs, and other artists put in the other sound effects. Classical animation techniques are a field of rich artistry. Computer animation is all the rage today and has supplanted the rich tradition in people’s minds of how drawings can be brought to life. Every form of art has its place though, in today’s world and for ever.

Adobe lightroom plug-ins
Written by admin, November 24th, 2010

Adobe lightroom plug-ins
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is the new professional tool for photographers, which is geared towards organizing the large amounts of image data in any resolution or size, any RAW or common format, with editing and post production features. The first version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom was released in January 2007, after a yearlong public beta testing period. The improved second version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom became available in summer of 2008, with multiple additions to the already popular tool, like multiple monitor support and more flexible printing options. The response to the new edition was just as favorable as when it initially was released, the improvements were made with vocal input by the users and professionals alike. Adobe was always famous for providing expanding capabilities for all of their major software platforms, and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is not different. There are several plug-ins which are already available for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and are meant to help the photography professional with creating the final result they have envisioned. While effects and presets for color correction can be imported as well, plug-ins provide additional features which were not intended to be a part of the basic software solution. For instance, there is a plug-in, which creates slide shows directly out of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, but in flash format, where also audio can be included; no flash programming capabilities are required. The DIMIN Slideshow plug-in for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 was created by Dmitry Fedorov and is available as a free download on Adobe’s web site and DIMIN software website as well. According to the developer center of Adobe, only few things can be manipulated by an Adobe Photoshop Lightroom plug-in, and that would be the Export Functionality, Metadata and Web Engine Functionality. There is a downloadable Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 SDK – software developer kit – which is loaded with Lua-language files, the computer language which was used to write the source code for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. The limitations to the extent of plug-in customization is deliberate, because Adobe is not willing to allow Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to expand into a behemoth like Photoshop, which is cluttered with additional functions, interfaces, filters and what not. The whole reason why Adobe Photoshop Lightroom was created was to simplify the workflow of professional photographers and allow them to export all the pictures they shoot and publish or sell them as fast as possible, in order to not spend too much time in front of the monitor screen. If a photographer likes to work in complicated environments, then there is Camera RAW, Adobe Bridge and Photoshop to keep them busy.

The fascinating world of impossibleanimations
Written by admin, November 23rd, 2010

The fascinating world of impossibleanimations
There are many examples of three-dimensional impossible objects that entertain and fascinate everyone. M.C.Escher made a name for himself in dreaming up spectacular and fantastic imaginary objects that could not exist in the real world. The problem with these traditional impossible objects is that they can only exist if they are shown in a static predetermined angle. A challenge for creative logical artists that they have been grappling with of recent is this: is it possible to create a three-dimensional impossible object that you can view from any angle without sacrificing any of the impossibility inherent in the object? As it happens, this strange requirement is indeed possible. In creating a multiple-angle impossible object, the creator must understand that turning the figure around will not cause the object to appear in any way that a regular object of that general appearance would appear in. Intuitive appearance to go with standard expectations mean nothing for impossible figures. Try visiting the Illusion Works website for a look at some of the most famous computer reconstructions of three-dimensional impossible objects. A 3D model is basically a more internally consistent image of an impossible object; when such an object gets translated on 2D paper, it loses its illusion. In an impossible figure, each individual component of the drawing is perfectly possible in real world terms. An incredible and illusory way of connecting these parts together in a way that misuses the conventions of 2-D representations, brings on the recognizably magical illusion of the impossible becoming possible. An animated impossible 3D model requires that the model be rotated all around to show itself in every way possible. Since such a model cannot exist in the real world, it will have to exist in the virtual world. This world will have to show the object in such a way that it retains itself smoothly across all angles the illusion that it is designed with. The object will have to simply keep changing itself to present a convincing illusion across all angles. It has been proposed that an understanding of something called the policy of the “complementary halves” could be the answer to this problem. The fascinating part of an impossible figure is the way an object exists in different ways on two ends and has the two ends meet in the middle in a seamless but untenable fashion. The two apparently incompatible ends are called the complementary halves. Each complementary half of an impossible figure shows that it does not belong with the other, but still somehow does. Visit the Illusion Works website for some demonstrations of how this technique works.
